BAYELSA PDP CONGRATULATES GUBER CANDIDATE, DOUYE DIRI…SAYS HE HAS CAPACITY, COMPETENCE TO SUCCEED GOV DICKSON…DAVID LYON, APC CANDIDATE LACKS CREDENTIALS TO GOVERN BAYELSA

The Bayelsa State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic has congratulated Senator Douye Diri, the newly elected Candidate of the party for the November 16, 2019 election in the state.

The State Secretary of the Party, Chief Godspower Keku, said in a statement on Wednesday that the party was happy with the emergence of Diri as its flag bearer after the keenly contested transparent and credible party primaries.

Keku described Diri as a committed public official with years of exemplary service to the development of Bayelsa, the Ijaw Nation and the country.

The party’s Secretary noted that Bayelsa was in need of a leader with vast experience in public service as Diri, who had been a Commissioner, a Principal Executive Secretary to the Governor, and a member of the Federal House of Representatives and later the Senate among others.

The PDP Scribe commended the other 20 aspirants of the party who contested the election with Diri for their display of maturity and respect for the overall interest of the party.

Keku called on the aspirants to support the candidate of the party stressing that the primaries could only produce one candidate out of the 21 aspirants who indicated interest in the governorship of the state.

Meanwhile, the PDP has flayed the APC over the emergence of pipeline security surveillance contractor, Mr. David Lyon, as the gubernatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress in the State.

Keku said that the leader of the APC in the state, and Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Chief Timipre Sylva, schemed out all the qualified contestants from the APC only to assault the sensibilities of Bayelsans with the candidacy of David Lyon.

The PDP Scribe wondered whether David Lyon was being prodded to contest a local government election or the governorship of Bayelsa.

He said that the APC Candidate Lyon lacked the requisite credentials, experience and pedigree to become Governor of Bayelsa State.

Keku who described the so called APC primaries which produced Lyon as a sham, noted that Lyon was Sylva’s personal imposition.

He condemned the calculated humiliation of Lokpobiri, who was made prominent by the PDP, and urged those humiliated by Sylva to rethink their political future.

He also thanked his fellow aspirants who for the maturity they displayed throughout the period of the campaign.

Sen. Diri made these comments in his acceptance speech on Wednesday, 3rd of September, 2019 in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State. GOVERNOR DICKSON HAS THE RIGHT TO SUPPORT ANY GUBERNATORIAL ASPIRANT…….Dr. Ayawei Nimibofa

GOVERNOR DICKSON HAS THE RIGHT TO SUPPORT ANY GUBERNATORIAL ASPIRANT…….Dr. Ayawei Nimibofa

By Aferiokhai Osigbemeh

As the Bayelsa State Peoples Democratic Party Gubernatorial Primary election approaches on September 3rd and with the 21 aspirants eyeing the party’s ticket for the November 16th governorship election all set, one aspirant, Dr. Nimibofa Ayawei has said that the Governor of the State, Hon. Henry Seriake Dickson reserves the right to support whoever he chooses to support as the flag bearer of the Party.

Ayawei Nimibofa who was the former Chairman of the Bayelsa State Boad of Internal Revenue was speaking at an interactive session with media men in Yanagoa over the weekend. He said that the PDP Primary was akin to fighting for the soul of the State and that it was beyond endorsement. It will be recalled that Ayawei as Chairman of the Bayelsa State Board of Internal Revenue brought about an exponential increase in the internally generated revenue of the State from a low three Hundred Million Naira (N300M) per Month to a high of over One Billion Naira(N1B) and attaining an annual high of Twelve point Five Billion Naira(N12.5b) in 2017.

He stated further that all the 21 PDP Gubernatorial aspirants were eminently qualified to govern the State but however maintained that, at the end of the day only one aspirant would emerge as the flag bearer of the Party. He stressed that it was important for the other 20 aspirants to join forces together to support whoever emerges as the PDP Flag Bearer in the State.

Dr. Ayawei Nimibofa said that if he is given the opportunity to govern Bayelsa State, his core areas of focus would be two folds, namely, Job Creation for the unemployed Youths and Tackling of Insecurity. He said that he would also work hard to see that a road links Brass where he noted that most of the oil offshore platforms are domiciled.

He said the unemployment and Security challenges could be tackled through harnessing the potentials of the Sea and that it has the capacity of taking more than 2000 youths off the streets thereby providing solution to the security situation in the state.

Ayawei, as part of his philanthropic disposition is currently building a Chemistry Laboratory in the Niger Delta University in Bayelsa State. He is also on record as the first Doctoral Graduate of the University. He specialized as an Analytical Chemist.

All is now set for the PDP Primary election  in Yenagoa and Bayelsans are looking forward to a continuation of the Restoration agenda in the state.

CELEBRATING A SILENT ACHIEVER AND PHILANTHROPIST……DR. NIMIBOFA AYAWEI PDP GUBERNATORIAL ASPIRANT IN BAYELSA STATE

CELEBRATING A SILENT ACHIEVER AND PHILANTHROPIST……DR. NIMIBOFA AYAWEI PDP GUBERNATORIAL ASPIRANT IN BAYELSA STATE

By J. P. Owoupele

Proverbs Eleven: Twenty-Four states “One gives freely, yet grows all the richer; another withholds what he should give and only suffers want”.

This scripture aptly describes Dr. Nimibofa Ayawei, who is seen by many as a silent achiever who has done so much for humanity and who reaches out to all.

Born on November 7th 1971 in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, Dr. Ayawei attended St Johns Primary School Koluama between 1977-83.

He then proceeded to Community Secondary School in the same community and obtained the West African School Certificate in 1983.

Young and intelligent Ayawei was always top of his class and thus given double promotion from class two to four in recognition of his brilliant performance.

In 1991, he enrolled to study Chemistry at the then Rivers State College of Education, an affiliate of  University of Ibadan and subsequently graduated in 1995 with flying colours at the age 24 yrs.

Ayawei began a postgraduate programme in Analytical Chemistry at the University of Port Harcourt and graduated in 2008.

In 2013 when the Niger Delta University opened its doors for Postgraduate studies, he enrolled for a doctorate degree in Analytical/Environmental Chemistry and became the first to be awarded a PhD in Niger Delta University.

Dr. Ayawei is of the belief that the development of a place heavily depends on the level of education of the people, hence his love for knowledge. Little wonder, he started an educational outreach which has given opportunity to many persons of less economic privilege, access to tertiary education at various levels.

Dr Ayawei also championed the development of his hometown, Koluama through various deliberate planning and construction of roads and provision of recreational facilities.

Having started his professional career as a Scientific Officer with the Bayelsa State Ministry of Environment, he was appointed as a member of the  Bayelsa State Scholarship Board in 2001 by Governor Alamieyeseigha.

With the creation of the twenty-four Rural Development Areas, (RDAs) which were created to take development to the grassroots; Dr Ayawei became the Chairman of Bassan-Koluama RDA in 2002.

Owing to his open disposition and achievements in the RDA, it was easy for the people of Southern Ijaw Constituency 4 to elect him as their representative in the State House of Assembly in 2003.

Dr. Ayawei as a man of integrity with high moral standards is principled to a fault, and a firm believer of the Bayelsa vision as envisioned by the founding fathers.

It is on record that when members of the State House of Assembly were placed under intense pressure to impeach former Governor, DSP Alamieyeseigha in 2005, Dr Ayawei was amongst the seven members who stood their grounds and refused to sign the impeachment because they believed that such decisions must come freely without any duress .

At the expiration of his tenure in 2007, Dr Ayawei ventured into business and later joined the restoration movement which galvanized support for the election of Governor Seriake Dickson.

Shortly after the election of the Governor, he was appointed the General Manager/Chief Executive Officer of Bayelsa State Housing and property development Authority and later Commissioner for Housing and Urban Development.

Upon the expiration of his appointment as Commissioner, he took up appointment as a lecturer in Niger Delta University as his efforts to return to the House of Representatives was thwarted.

In 2016, he was appointed Chairman, Bayelsa State Board of Internal Revenue. Upon resumption of office as the chairman of the board, he brought in phenomenal changes that saw the state revenue move from a paltry three hundred million monthly to a staggering sum of one billion and above monthly within a short period.

The astronomical rise in internally generated revenue is clearly attributed to his administrative prowess in managing the revenue collection process and deployment of electronic payment platforms that greatly plugged areas of leakages.

This positively led to Bayelsa State ranking fifteenth amongst states in highest IGR according to the National Bureau of Statistics having generated over twelve point five billion Naira in 2017 in line with Governor Dickson’s drive to prepare the state for life after crude oil production.

Dr. Nimibofa Ayawei is not just a Chemist, Academic, Politician but a knowledgeable and highly skilled administrator whose touch of excellence in management places him high above many.

Bayelsa state needs a home grown leader who is at peace and at home with all, with a clear understanding of the issues and people. This expectation is met by Dr Ayaowei and he has shown clearly that he has the capacity, pedigree and the wherewithal to give sound and visionary leadership to the people of Bayelsa state.

As we await the flag amongst the PDP aspirants, we commend the leadership of the PDP and the people to embrace such a SHINNING LIGHT IN OUR MIDST.

When Governor Dickson Pulled Nigeria to Toru-Orua

When Governor Dickson Pulled Nigeria to Toru-Orua

By Stanley Nkwazema

Emotions sometimes fail men. No matter how strong they are, men always have a strong affinity and bond with their mothers. It becomes easily noticeable when men lose their mothers. The Governor of Bayelsa State, Henry Seriake Dickson, who loves praising God with his tambourine, could not help but pause, before thanking guests, who had come from far and near, for honoring his invite to his mother’s memorial service at his country home in Toru Orua, Sagbama Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.

The guests included former head of state Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar and former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Ebele Jonathan. Also present were Senator Chris Ngige, a special representative of President Muhammadu Buhari; Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State; the Minority House Leader, Ndudim Godwin Elumelu; the PDP national Chairman, Chief Uche Secondus, among other distinguished personalities.

After a rendition of three songs in Ibo, Yoruba and Ijaw, which has become a kind of ritual in every church service whenever the Governor leads in praise and worship, he broke down, though not in tears, as he spoke glowingly about his late mum and her last ten years on earth and her battle with the deadly cancer disease. Indeed, he was very emotional as he spoke about his mum, her life, her battle with cancer and her last two requests – building a befitting church for the Anglican Communion and a market for the women of Toru-Orua in Sagbama Local Government.

At the launch venue were Gen Abdulsalami Abubakar, former Deputy Senate President Ibrahim Mantu, and Alhaji Mohammed Abacha, who represented his mother (If you recall, Bayelsa State was created in 1996 by his late father Gen. Sani Abacha). They were seated at the marquee eagerly waiting for the unveiling of the Gold Coast Dickson Memorial Cancer Center and the Henry Seriake Dickson foundation.

My great grandparents were renowned rain-makers, but I may not be in a position to know if the people of Toru-Orua, the riverine community, are also bonafide rainmakers. After a heavy downpour that lasted till the early hours of the day before the programme, the sky stood still for the momentous occasion even in the season of heavy rains.

Dickson went beyond building the church and laying the foundation stone of an ultra-modern market for the women, he equally built a center for cancer awareness, detection and treatment in honour of the late Mama Goldcoast Dickson, named Goldcoast Dickson Memorial Cancer Centre. The late Goldcoast died of lung cancer on August 8, 2018 at the M.D Anderson Cancer Centre in Houston Texas, United States of America, seven months after being diagnosed with the illness. She died of lung cancer even though she was not a smoker. So it calls for concern and for scientists to explain the deaths of those who don’t smoke. He equally launched the Henry Seriake Dickson Foundation (HSDF), a legacy operational foundation established with a seed grant. Its focus is on actual investment in the talents and vibrancy in Bayelsa with the conviction that the region should be the center for healthcare, education, innovation and entrepreneurial drive in Nigeria.

It was carnival-like environment when, after the church service, Senator Ben Murray Bruce took up the challenge of directing the affairs of the foundation launch. Many indeed have lost their loved ones to cancer and could not hide it when called upon to donate to the cause. Almost all the 21 aspirants of the PDP gubernatorial primaries scheduled for September 3, turned the place into a mini campaign ground, apparently sensing the high number of friends that will throng the venue to honour the governor. Only a few stayed till the launch of the Foundation as they hurried out of the crowded church venue.

Interestingly, Governor Dickson, who has never spared any occasion to discuss the fact that his mother was an integral part of his life journey, explained that the foundation would, among other things, carry out research aimed at early detection and treatment of cancer. He indicated that the foundation was part of his efforts towards continually contributing to the well-being of humanity, urging all to donate to the cause.

“It is a humble effort on my part to set up this cancer foundation because I thought I should have a vehicle through which I could do some public good for humanity. I therefore humbly call on public – spirited individuals and those who have resources to support this worthy cause to stop cancer from ravaging our population,” he said.

Although President Muhamadu Buhari could not personally grace the occasion, his representative, Dr.Chris Ngige the Labour and Productivity Minister said the center could be the nucleus of a major health institution to save millions of lives, while noting that the foundation should be given the much-needed support to excel.

Abdulsalami Abubakar, the former Head of State who handed over to Obasanjo in 1999, sat closely to him at the launch and reiterated the urgent need for a well-focused and coordinated action against cancer that has become a scourge ravaging Nigeria. Abubakar described the effort as laudable and a wonderful gesture that should be supported while appealing for generous donations to support the foundation.

Obasanjo, who was touched by Dickson’s effort towards honouring his late mother with the setting up of the cancer center, said only those who had come into close contact with victims and the trauma they go through would appreciate the pain, anguish and hopelessness being inflicted on the society.

According to Obasanjo, “Cancer can be managed if it is diagnosed early. The second thing you say your foundation will be doing is what I call institutional memory; one of the things we are very bad at in our country. Keep and maintain records and let it be accessible for those who want to do research. When you see what cancer does, particularly the excruciating pain the sufferer goes through, you would want to do everything and anything to comfort those who are victims, and that is exactly what you are doing.

“One of the most depressing sites is the national archives. When you go there, you would almost weep. We have to do something about that.”

Also lending his voice to the laudable venture, Jonathan, who also hails from Bayelsa State, pledged his support to the foundation. He agreed that cancer had become a big problem to the world and stressed the need for collaborative efforts to curb the disease.

Jonathan recalled how his Special Adviser (SA) on Strategy and Documentation and renowned environmentalist, Oronto Douglas who incidentally is also from Bayelsa State, succumbed to the dreaded disease.

The National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party, (PDP), noted that when the center is completed, it would help in reducing capital flight on medical tourism.

“I want to join Governor Dickson in calling other leaders to take this good example and take the various areas in our Health sector so that we may reduce the number of deaths.”

The HSDF has five strategic objectives; – ensuring that state of the art healthcare is available and cost effective; support youth employability; vocational education and entrepreneurship; enhance STEM and early childhood education standards; support women economic empowerment and invest in preserving the environment.

Besides cancer, the foundation will “champion the campaign on environmental degradation in Bayelsa, Niger Delta and Nigeria and also effect paradigm shift, especially in the youths through the provision of educational scholarships, trainings, seminar, both locally and internationally at the HSDF institute.

“Promoting the arts, music, Izon culture, language and the archiving of historic artifacts would create platforms and enabling environment for young people to discover, develop and maximise their talents in sports through the HSD wrestling classics, Nanaye Dickson Wrestling competition and HSD football tournament and many others.” The foundation will be focusing on children between the ages of 2-13 years with shelter and sponsor of children’s homes and offering free education. It will also engage youths (15-35) by supporting scholarships, trainings, and skills acquisition programmes- creating platforms for sports development, creating environment for the arts, culture and heritage while creating opportunity for leadership training and mentorship.

For the female folk, the core areas will be sponsoring and supporting cancer awareness, counseling, care, diagnostics and treatments while providing affordable public healthcare and support small scale enterprises.

The foundation, as a legacy foundation, recognises that it cannot achieve the objective on its own with the underlying strategy to forge synergy and collaborations and partnerships with like-minded local and international actors and institutions based on shared values.

On tracking impact, the assessment of HSDF will be aligned to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

RESTORATION CUP ORGANIZERS URGE NEW BAYELSA LG CHAIRMEN TO PROMOTE SPORTS DEVELOPMENT

RESTORATION CUP ORGANIZERS  URGE NEW BAYELSA LG CHAIRMEN TO PROMOTE SPORTS DEVELOPMENT

By Aferiokha Osigbemeh

The Central Working Committee of the Governor Seriake Dickson Football Tournament has urged the newly sworn in chairmen of the eight local government areas in Bayelsa State to promote sports development, especially football, in their domains.

Director General of the tournament popularly known as the Restoration Cup, Mr. Ono Akpe, who stated this in a congratulatory message on their election and swearing in, said their victory was a positive development that would boost sports at the grassroots across the state.

Akpe said organisers of the biggest grassroots football competition in Nigeria appreciate the support of their predecessors and looked forward to strengthening the partnership to promote football development at the grassroots.

He described sports, especially football, as a unifying factor, and, therefore, called on the newly sworn in chairmen to build on the foundation already laid by the Honourable Seriake Dickson-led Restoration Government in sports development.

The organisers called on them to settle down quickly so they can spread the dividends of the Restoration Government to their council areas for the benefit of those at the grassroots.

“All over the world, sports, particularly football, has helped to develop young men and women physically, mentally and materially. Therefore, all efforts must be made to support and sustain sporting activities, especially at the grassroots where talents abound,” he said.

Akpe stressed the need to ensure the sustenance of the Seriake Dickson Football Tournament even after the expiration of the governor’s tenure in office.

He also solicited their support in ensuring the success of the ongoing Restoration Cup, which is currently in its qualifying stages.

“The Restoration Cup is one of the largest grassroots football tournaments in the country that has been embraced by the government, people and  communities in the state. I call on our chairmen to key into this tournament and support it wholeheartedly.”

He noted that the tournament has helped to foster peace, harmony and better relations between communities across the state.

BAYELSA PDP PRIMARIES: ALAIBE, OSAISAI, OTHERS JITTERY

…DEVICE PLOT TO CAUSE MAYHEM TO MOVE PRIMARIES TO ABUJA, PH

…PETITIONS NATIONAL HEADQUARTERS, OVER ELECTED LG CHAIRMEN, COUNCILLORS AS DELEGATES

By Aferiokha Osigbemeh

Some of aspirants òf the People’s Democratic Party In Bayelsa State including former Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission, Chief Timi Alaibe, and Dr. Chris Osaisai, and others have become panicky as the September 3, 2019 primaries of the Party draws closer.

The  Association of Concerned Bayelsa Professionals, Chief Jasper Timiebi said in a statement on Thursday that the aspirants have devised a plot to cause premeditated violence and instability in Bayelsa with the intent to arm twist national leadership of the PDP to move the primaries to Abuja or the neighboring Port Harcourt,  Rivers State.

Timiebi said that Security intelligence at the disposal of the group revealed that the aspirants are deploying their men to plant bombs, engage in sporadic shootings, to create a non existent threat  of violence to actualize their plot to move the primaries outside Bayelsa contrary to the stipulations of the law.

He said that the ACBP, a body of professionals across the eight local government areas of the state, was concerned about the increasing desperation occasion by blackmail and the evil plot to unleash mayhem and killings in Bayelsa just to achieve a satanic plot.

He stressed that the aspirants behind the evil plot against Bayelsa and her people were worried about the influence of Governor Henry Seriake Dickson who have led the Restoration Team òf the PDP for almost eight years since 2012.

Timiebi recalled that the said aspirants instigated and indeed sponsored litigations to frustrate the decision of the PDP led government to conduct the last local government elections without success.

According to him, when the Government vacated all the cases numbering five that were instituted against the conduct of the polls in Abuja, Yenagoa and other cities, the aspirants decided to go opt for a second option to frustrate the participation of the elected council officials in the primaries.

He insisted that the ACBP which monitored the election in the state observed that it went well with its outcome asserting the massive influence of the governor in the state.

Timiebi said that the Campaign Organisation of the one contestants Osaisai wrote a petition dated August 10, 2019, to the National Chairman òf the PDP, in which he claimed that there were threats to the peaceful conduct of the gubernatorial primaries in Bayelsa.

According to him, the petition signed by Dr. Ebieri Jones, is kicking against the inclusion of the elected chairmen and councillors as delegates in the primaries as provided for in the PDP constitution.

He said that the petition addressed to the PDP National Chairman copied all members of the National Working Committee, the Chairman  and Secretary of the party’s Board òf Trustees.

Timiebi said that ACBP was motivated by a strong urge to ensure that the search for the next governor òf Bayelsa State was not tainted by underhand tactics and evil machinations by desperate politicians who would stop at nothing to be foist themselves on the state.

He enjoined all the aspirants to play by the rule and embrace the repeated slogan of former President Jonathan that nobody’s ambition is worth the life of a single Bayelsan.

He urged the aspirants to talk to the delegates rather than yielding their campaigns to a desperation ignited by the fear of defeat, adding that only a candidate would emerge out of the 21 aspirants.

PDP GOVS. FORUM REACTS TO KILLINGS IN ABIA AND TARABA STATES

PDP GOVS. FORUM REACTS TO KILLINGS IN ABIA AND TARABA STATES

By Aferiokha Osigbemeh

The PDP Governors Forum has condemned the killing of three policemen and a civilian by men of the Nigerian Army in Taraba State. It equally condemned the killing of a commercial motorcyclist (Okada man), in Abia State on Wednesday afternoon by yet another soldier.

In a press release issued from its Abuja Secretariat, Chairman of the Forum and Governor of Bayelsa State, Hon. Seriake Dickson, on behalf of his colleague-members, described the killings as unfortunate, sad and tragic.

The release in part reads, “These killings have in recent times taken another gruesome dimension and this nonchalant attitude is not only wicked, malicious, unprofessional and cowardly; it is totally unacceptable to the people of this country.

“We wish to reiterate that the killings are unnecessary. It is very pathetic that the Nigerian Army would abandon their constitutional role of defending the borders of the country from external aggression to descend into such lowly criminality. It is sad that a security personnel, who is paid and maintained with tax-payers’ money, could turn around to kill the person he was paid to protect.

‘’The forum calls on the federal government to redress the situation immediately, as this portrays signs of inefficiency and irresponsibility. We implore the federal government to adequately compensate the families of victims and ensure justice is served on the culprits.

Recall that the police authorities had on Wednesday announced that three of its officers were killed and other personnel injured after Nigerian soldiers opened fire on the Assistant Superintendent of Police, Felix Adolije-led-Intelligence Response Team (IRT), along Ibi-Jalingo Road, in the process of moving a kidnap kingpin, Alhaji Hamisu, to the Command Headquarters in Jalingo, the capital of Taraba State.

The identities of the policemen have been given as Inspector Mark-Ediale, Sergeant Dahiru Musa, and Sergeant Usman Danzumi. A civilian also lost his life.

The army, however, explained that the killings were done in error following a distress call that some suspected kidnappers who happened to be policemen were on the run with their victim.

And in Abia State, the slain 30-year old commercial motorcyclist, Mr Chimaobi Nwogu, hailed from Umuokereke Ngwa Community in Obingwa Local Government Area of the State, where the state governor, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu also hails from. Nwogu was reportedly shot dead in a community near Aba, after he refused to offer a bribe of N100 to a military officer at a checkpoint. He left behind a pregnant wife, two sons and an aged mother.

Meanwhile, Governor Ikpeazu on Thursday said that the armed security personnel, “Cpl. Ajayi”, who allegedly shot and killed Nwogu had been arrested.
